Big news for Strandhill artisan ice cream makers and Sligo Food Trail members Mammy Johnston’s whose award winning G&T sorbet is now on sale in Lidl stores countrywide. The new take home range is appropriately called ‘Half Cut’ and comes in three flavours – Gin & Tonic, Mohito and Prosecco. Best try all three before deciding which is your favourite. Hurry though, at least two Lidl’s sold out of Half Cut on the first day.

‘Half Cut’ is a collaboration between Neil Byrne of Mammy Johnston’s Ice Cream Parlour in Strandhill and Michael O’Dowd of Gelato in Enniscrone. The pair take ice cream making seriously; they studied in Bologna, graduating with a degree in gelato making. They went on to beat the Italians at their own game, winning Gold medals with their gelatos for the last three years at the ‘Ice Cream Oscars’, the International Exhibition of Artisan Gelato in Rimini, Italy.

It’s a big step moving from running a family ice cream parlour to developing a retail take-home brand. It took Neil and Michael two years before they were entirely satisfied and the product they have ended up with is truly excellent. Lidl is just the first multiple we’ll see ‘Half Cut’ in.

Lidl will stock ‘Half Cut’ for the next two weeks or while stocks last. If you miss it – don’t forget you can always find Mammy Johnston’s ice creams and sorbets at their Strandhill parlour and on many Sligo Food Trail menus.

Congratulations to all involved.
